WHERE ROSES DIE

DARE TO LOVE IN A WORLD THAT HATES YOU?

Isaiah 57:1–2

The just have perished,
    but no one takes it to heart;
The steadfast are swept away,
    while no one understands.
Yet the just are taken away from the presence of evil,
 and enter into peace.

Synopsis

1926, Jalisco, Mexico.

A love that dares to bloom in a dark moment of Mexican history.

As religious persecution and anti-Chinese prejudice threaten to tear the country apart, Areli Marquez, and Aliel Han find themselves at the center of this story.

Areli, the daughter of an ambitious hacienda family, dreams not of high society, but of opening a bakery of her own, following in the footsteps of her uncle Leonardo. Yet, in the midst of trying to find herself and what it means to live by her catholic faith in a brewing storm of persecution, she falls in love with Aliel Han (韩阿良, Hán Āliáng) --a Chinese Mexican, no stranger to persecution himself.

For the first time, Areli feels hope towards her bleak future that was once pre written by her parents set on marrying her off to the richest hacendado in Jalisco, Esteban Barrientos.

But with the rising anti Chinese sentiments this dream becomes distant with every passing day. Courting one another becomes dangerous and Aliel mysteriously disappears after a brutal attack, unbeknownst to Areli who is left to believe she has been abandoned, giving Esteban the upperhand, against her wishes.

Unknown to her, Aliel has survived—but at an unimaginable cost. Transformed into an undead-- a vampire, Aliel  wanders the mountains of Jalisco believing he has become a monster unworthy of God's mercy and the woman he loves, until he is encouraged to return for her by those hiding in a monastery deep in the woodlands of Jalisco, with more secrets than they can keep..

As war engulfs Mexico and long-buried truths come to light, Areli and Aliel must confront hatred, faith, and the darkness that seeks to consume them before the future they dreamed of is lost forever.

Will their love truly bloom? Or will it be poisoned by the monsters around them, leaving them in a place Where Roses Die.

Unearthing forgotten histories

Beyond the romance and mystery, this novel strives to shed light on a vital, often overlooked, chapter of history. I aim to bring to the forefront the forgotten narratives of the diverse groups persecuted in Mexico during the early 1900s. Whether due to their Chinese ethnicity or their Catholic faith, these individuals faced immense challenges. Through this story, I hope to honor their struggles and sacrifices, offering readers a poignant insight into a past that shaped the present. This novel is a testament to resilience, faith, and the enduring human spirit.
